Moonta Mines

Interested in Cornish copper mining history and heritage, The Moonta Mines forms a unique and important part of the Cornish mining heritage. Visiting the Moonta Mines will provide you with plenty to do from exploring the State Heritage Area, including the Moonta Mines Museum, Railway and the Sweet Shop.

Moonta Mines Museum

The Moonta Mines Museum is located in the former Moonta Mines Model School. The museum is now owned by the National Trust of SA and 14 rooms and houses thematic displays on the Cornish miners’ lifestyles.

Moonta Mines Railway

The Moonta Mines Railway is a guided tour of the historic Moonta Mines State Heritage Area. Departing from the platform adjacent to the Moonta Mines Museum. Featuring extensive commentary from local drivers, passengers are taken past many historic landmarks of the former mining operations, including the reservoir, ore sorting floors, the former Precipitation Works, and through a tunnel in Ryan’s Tailings Heap.

Splash Town

Splash Town is the Copper Coast’s fun new water park, located by the foreshore at Moonta Bay. This free water play area has plenty to keep you entertained, with plenty of slides, mushrooms and a large tipping water bucket. Splash Town is open from the 1 Oct to the end of April every year.

Ducatoon Park

Ducatoon Park is a leading South Australian thorough breeding operation and a Yorke Peninsula tourist attraction. Ducatoon park welcomes visitors, by appointment, many buses already visit the stud. Visitors to the Park get to see a working horse stud first hand, and may even get the chance to cuddle a newborn foal (depending on the time of the year). It also has extensive gardens which you are invited to stroll through and even inspect the large walk-in aviary. A highlight of the tour is a visit to Peter’s ‘Brag Room’ which showcases his award winning wood-work.

The Farm Shed Museum & Tourist Centre, Kadina

The Farm Shed Museum & Tourist Centre comprises of two key features; the Farm Shed Museum and the Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre which are both complimented by a variety of other services and facilities, including; Accommodation Bookings, Souvenirs, Book & Crafts, Conference Facilities, Guide Group & School Tours, Miniature Train Rides.

The Farm Shed Museum

Over a century of Australian farming history is on show across half a hectare of under cover exhibition space. The interpretive displays bring together the stories and farming collection to which the Yorke Peninsula is well known for. This museum lays claim to the country’s most comprehensive collection of dry-land farming equipment. Visitors can take a self-guided tour through the centre.

Copper Coast Indoor Play Centre

Located at the Copper Coast Tourism Centre right next to The Farm Shed, the Play Centre is the only indoor play centre on the Yorke Peninsula. The Copper Coast’s newest fun and family friendly attraction is a must visit. Sit back, relax and enjoy the safe, clean, awesome environment while watching your kids play. Don’t forget socks! The Farm Shed Cafe has a range of snacks for you to enjoy while visiting the Play Centre – we know you will enjoy the great coffee.

Miniature Railway

The Copper Coast Old Engineering and Machinery Club runs mini railway rides. This handmade track operates twice a month at the Farm Shed complex and is a delight for all ages.

Wallaroo Historical Walks

Take a two hour guided tour of Wallaroo, you will have the chance to visit all the important heritage sites around the town. Tours must be made via appointment and bookings must be made for the walking tours with a minimum of 5 people is required. A guide is provided for walking tours and can be arranged for coach tours.

Wallaroo Heritage Museum

The Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum was once the town’s first post office. Now a National Trust run museum it houses extensive displays of the copper smelting era 1861-1923, postal and telephone history, religious and civic affairs, industry, sport, entertainment, extensive nautical, and general local history. The large nautical complex at the museum is home to one of the most popular attractions, George the Giant Squid, a deep ocean dwelling squid, obtained from the stomach of the whale in 1980 and is now preserved in formalin. This museum is must stop for fans of history and local attractions.

Barley Stacks Wines

A short drive away from the historic town of Maitland, Barley Stacks Wines offers visitors a unique Australian experience unlike any other. The wine produced at Barley Stacks Wines is made from the grapes grown in the Barley Stacks Wines vineyards, which are crushed, fermented, stored and bottled right on site. Barley Stacks Wines is the first commercial vineyard and winery to be established on the traditional Barley Belt of the Yorke Peninsula. This is family owned and operated by the Schulz family, with a high level of determination; passion and commitment to ensuring only premium wines are produced.

Walk The Yorke

With more than 500km of continuous shared walking & cycling leisure trail, you can explore Yorke Peninsula’s coastline from Port Wakefield to Moonta Bay. Walk the Yorke showcases Yorke Peninsula’s spectacular coastline, diverse coastal communities and environments unique to ‘Yorkes’. With a variety of different lengths of walks including coastal trails and town walks. The hero walks are highly recommended by the designers and developers and have some of the best scenery and walking experiences.

Port Hughes General Store

Port Hughes General Store is located right on the beachfront of Port Hughes offering dine in and takeaway meals, fishing, tackle, bait and ice. We definitely recommend stopping by and trying their breakfast! Our favourite is the Beach Brekky, which has also been enjoyed by Cosi from South Aussie with Cosi.

Port Hughes Tavern

The Port Hughes Tavern is located right across the road from the Port Hughes foreshore, Jetty and Boat Ramp. Open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, with an extensive A La Carte Menu. With a beer garden and front bar with pool table, private function bookings are also available. If you want to enjoy a delicious meal for a reasonable price with the stunning view that the Port Hughes Foreshore produces, this is a must stop location. The best thing of all, is its walking distance from Village park, and right next to our Foreshore park, so you wont have to go far at all!

The Deck Bar & Café at the Copper Club

This Deck Bar and Café has incredible views of the golf club and the ocean, which makes it a fantastic place to eat, drink and relax. Open 7 days a week for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, and open Friday and Saturday nights for dinner from 6pm. With a relaxing environment, and a menu that provides quality and variety at a great price.  Also offering functions and catering and weddings.

Located just down the road from the Park, The Deck Bar & Café is nice a close and is walking distance from the Park, we even have a footpath that will take you right to the golf club.

Moonta Mines Sweet Shop

The Moonta Mines Sweet Shop which was formally the Moonta Mines Post Office until the 1970s. The shop is now owned by The National Trust and run by volunteers. Featuring a large range of old-fashioned sweets and drinks, a trip to Moonta is not complete without a visit to the Moonta Mines Sweet Shop.

Henry on George Café

Henry on George Café in Moonta Bay is a beautiful family owned café that offers delicious breakfast and fantastic coffee and milkshakes. Open from 9am to 5pm daily you must make sure you make this a stop off location while you are visiting the area!
